Conservation Week & International Coastal Clean Up Day

The Biggest Beach CleanUp we have undertaken was held on Saturday 19 September in conjunction with the Department of Conservation's Conservation Week and Project AWARE's International Coastal Clean Up Day.  Approximately 90 people turned out to Castlecliff Beach armed with plastic bags, buckets, gloves and a community spirit to help combat the war against marine debris.  A huge amount of rubbish was collected and disposed of from the afternoon's efforts.  Some items included several dead carcasses washed up on the beach, car parts, netting, ceiling tiles and a whole pile of aluminium cans. After the cleanup was completed, a free sausage sizzle was provided along with apples and water for the participants.

This day was organised with the help of Hannah from Department of Conservation and Kyllie Martin from the Public Health Department at the Hospital.  We were also very fortunate to have been provided with sponsorship and support by GDS Facility & Property, ACC, St Johns Ambulance, Cancer

Society, Wanganui District Council and The Waterman.  On behalf of the environment thank you to all those that turned out on the day to help.  This was an overwhelming response.

Below are some of the photos from the day and the rubbish that was collected.

International Coastal Clean Up Day, 20 & 21 September 2008

We have made some changes to our participation in the International Coastal Clean up for 2008.

This year it has been decided that we will complete a land based cleanup on the Saturday in Wanganui around Castlecliff beach area as well as an underwater and land cleanup in some of the bays that we use on a regular basis down in Wellington on the Sunday.

This is your chance to do something positive for our environment and try to remove some of the debris that constantly finds its way into our waterways and onto the beaches.

If you are interested in volunteering for the day, we will be departing from both Wanganui and Palmerston North and heading south to Wellington.  All travel and cleanup expenses will be covered by Go Deep Scuba.

For those who will be completing the underwater portion of the cleanup, tanks will be provided free of charge.

For those on land, rubber gloves and rubbish bags will also be provided.

We are passionate about protecting our environment and by giving up just a little of your time, you too can make a difference.  Please contact Sharon to register your interest in attending.

Seaweek 2007

Seaweek 2007 was a huge success and we had lots of fun making and painting "Honey" our Humpback Whale baby.  She will displayed in the shop shortly.

We were very fortunate to get involved in the running of Seaweek this year with the Department of Conservation and what a great finale to have displays and "Honey" at the Mardi Gras on the Saturday.  There were tons of kids around and everyone seemed to have a good time.

Check out the Seaweek website for more information http://www.seaweek.org.nz/ and to learn about the focus for 2007.

International Coastal Clean Up Day

The 2005 International Coastal Clean Up Day was held on 17 September 2005 up at Virginia Lake.  We had a great crew this year helping to clean up this local waterway.

We collected several bags of rubbish and some larger items, such as road signs, road cones, an old wire rubbish bin and of course the usual bread bags, drink bottles, beer bottles, lighters, kitchen waste.

Thanks to all the volunteers who put their hand up to assist this year,  we appreciate your support.

Go Deep Scuba Does it Again!!

Go Deep Scuba Wins International Award!

Go Deep Scuba is a winner in the 2005 Project AWARE Foundation's Environmental Achievement Award for dedication to Environmentally Responsible Business Practices and Commitment to Conservation of the Underwater Environment.  We are the only dive centre in New Zealand and one of only 21 worldwide to receive this award in 2005.

Go Deep Scuba received the award for the work that has gone into establishing the AWARE Kids programme into our school holiday programme.   The AWARE Kids programme is run in conjunction with the PADI Seal Team programme over the school holidays, every day for one week.

The PADI Seal Team introduces scuba diving and scuba skills to the kids aged 8-15 years.  The AWARE Kids portion of the programme incorporates environment awareness issues, such as recycling, environmental clean ups, endangered species, water conversation, sharks, turtles, whales and dolphins.

There are five AWARE missions that the participants complete to finish the programme.  There is a clean up - we do at either Virginia Lake and Castlecliff Beach; research endangered species - we ran an on street survey to find out what people knew about sharks being endangered and the finning of sharks etc; educating them about recycling - again we did a street survey and the results were sent to the District Council for their comments;

water conservation and the last mission is to write to a government official, department or council, and Project AWARE in Australia advising them of our local environment issues or an issue they feel passionate about and what could be done to help solve the problem.

If you would like more information on our school holidays programme check out the kids page on this website.

From July 2005, Go Deep Scuba has been accredited as a Go-Eco operator.  This is a recognition from Project Aware.

Go ECO Operators - We are committed to environmentally responsible business practices and to providing our customers with dive experiences that enhance visitor awareness of our local aquatic environment.
